i recently tried to install linux mandrake 8.0.

install went fine, but upon reboot i get the following message
kernel panic-cannot mount file system on device 03:01

does anyone know what that means?

mandrake 7.1 works fine on the same machine....so does redhat 6.0

please please please...

Maybe it is that you've made a mistake about the booting device and dont
find the partition or if not, youve shut-down the system while formatting or
something like that... i suggest you to reinstall and make sure to boot on
the good device

Sounds possibly like the driver used for your hard drive is buggy
under Mandrake 8.0.. Might go to Mandrakes website and see if you
can find any bug reports on your hard drive controller.
