Linux is designed to run on slow, old systems. The limiting factor isn't actually the processor speed, I'm finding it can be the RAM to run it with some decent speed. I also know that FreeBSD (Free Unix) can be run on a 386 with little RAM, so I know that Linux should run on a 486 decently. I'd go through the website of a distribution you like and find system requirements. Most of the Linux distros will run on computers dating back to the 386 since the Intel ASM instruction set is backwards compatibile back to the 386. Thos distros include, RedHat, Slackware, Debian... Even FreeBSD!
