Is there any way of getting a linux box to talk to a microsoft network and
share files to/from it without running samba/NT stations?

Microsoft had a unix client/server tool about a year ago. I can't actually
remember the name. However, if you were to go to Microsofts tech site,
search on unix & nt4 i'm sure you'll land on a usefull link.
