Use partition magic to section the drive. Then before you install Linux which
ever distro you use make sure that you think about what you need it for first.
UI would either go to download Suse or Redhat. They have never given me a
problem and I have used them both faithfully. I have more experience with RH
than suse though. As far as the cable modem goes, it won't matter a glee ful
bit since what you are concerned with is the NIC that the CABLE modem is
connected to. Make sure that you can get drivers for the NIC before you start
the install. The other bit o advice I can offer you would be to check around
for drivers for your hardware. One thing to work in Windows, completely
differnet working in Linux. Check some of the help pages to see if your
hardware will be supported under linux, for example your cordless optical mouse.

Thanks JM
