I am having trouble installing Mandrake 8.0
when i go to basic(first) install screena nd simply press enter (there
are 2 options, A) press enter for install and B) press F1 for more
options)  it goes to 'second stage install' and sez  root"" is not
valid
then sez   program crashed abnormally... unmounting filesystems
/proc

when i press f1 at the first screen and type   linux root=" "
it sez   
Kernel panic: I have no root and i want to scream!

help?

This is presumably root on the install disc, perhaps you have a duff one.
