I am at my wits end I swear it. Forget all the other problems I am having with linux. I bought a copy of maximum linux and it came with a CD which had some nice software I would like to install. The problem is I have no clue how to install them, if I just start uncompressing them it doesn't work ( should know I tried and now I have wasted space but thats another story) and there are no automated installation executables or anything like that and I don't even know how to find an executable. In the micro$oft garbage there is .com, .bat, and .exe extensions identifying programs as executables. I think two things that would make linux just excellent is automated installation procedures for programs, and executables that have a specific extension. I realize the latter is most likely not going to happen as alot of stuff would have to be done to make this so. However the former can be done, and needs to be done for those who are not admins and don't know their way around linux(people such as me). I am a hardware and internet tech but I have no experience with linux. All my experience is with dos, win3.x and win9x. With all the new M$ crap coming out such as me and 2000 I know this stuff is garbage and have decided it is time to go to linux. Although I am still using 98se and will be along side of linux for awhile. I am running peanut linux version 8.2 with kernel version 2.2.18 and KDE(which I cannot stand) Speaking of which I cannot figure out how to get xfce installed off the maximum linux CD and every suggestion that I have tried including the stuff that was step by step has been no help whatsoever. Any help anyone could give me would be of great help. -- Fantacmet@ipns.com Fantacmet@yahoo.com Fantacmet.tripod.com/main If ignorance is bliss then why aren't more people happy?

As an appendage, I know people have tried to help me with a couple of things and have said something abuot the make command and gave me instructions while I was in windows so I could try it when I rebooted into linux only to find out there is no make command. Or at least none that I can find. -- Fantacmet@ipns.com Fantacmet@yahoo.com Fantacmet.tripod.com/main If ignorance is bliss then why aren't more people happy? I too am fairly new to Linux but I have found that to install a program is fairly easy. After decompression to a temp directory, if there is a "makefile" just type "make" in that directory. Then right after compiling, type "make-install" and viola...you got it installed. Make is a command located in the /bin or /sbin dir that is executed to compile source code into something the machine can use. An alternative I have also found is to use RPM manager and install that way. If you have a precompiled bin file, to execute it type "./filename.bin" remembering to put the ./ before the file name. Hope this helps. B.

Hello Fantacmet! I have just completed a course in Red Hat Linux v.7 where part of our experience was to walk thru the intallation of this software in a dual boot environment with Windows 98 - I have since done it at home as well in a dual boot environment with Windows ME. It is unclear from this info. what your intended plan of application for this software is. I will convey to you what I have learned - perhaps you will find it helpful. To being with we were required to partition our hard drives using PQMagic version 4 or 5 (depending upon the Operating System (O.S.) needs). These partitions were very specific and could cause the MS 98 system to become unstable if not properly done. We were working, in both cases with a 20 GB Hard drive. (PARTITION INFO: Resize/move C: drive to size not exceeding 8GB, Create extended partition (approx 11 GB)for remaining MB, then create 1 logical partition, Linux Ext2 Type, of approx. 15.7 MB (max.) (this partition needs to be made bootable** see note later on - how to make it so with cfdisk (linux application). The next logical partition to create is again a Linux Ext2 Type of 11000MB, and finally create 1 logical partition of Linux Swap Type 439 MB (remaining space). Once this is completed exit PQMagic and select yes to apply changes. Your computer will reboot and apply changes in DOS just before starting Windows98. The PC should boot one more time - check to see that it still boots in Windows properly. WE ARE NOW READY TO INSTALL LINUX (skip the previous info. if you do not want a dual boot system ... Server installation cannot work in dual boot environment - it will wipe out and replace MS O.S.) Put the LINUX CD in the cdrom drive and RESTART Windows 98 or ME. Your PC is now booting from the CDROM. At boot prompt, just press ENTER. The process for this installation was as follows: Configuration Screens - Language=English, Keyboard - click NEXT, Mouse - your mouse type, Installation Method - Workstation. From here, for dual boot environment, you will want to select the Druid Partition Method and select the hda 5 (not 1, this is where windows sits). Select EDIT and change the mount point to /boot, the size should be 15 MB and the Partition Type should be: Linux Native (if not adjust here). NEXT, highlight hda6, select EDIT and ensure this mount point is set to /, size is 11000 MB and Partition Type is again, Linux Native. Next, the partitions to format are hda5 and hda 6 - be careful not to touch the hda1 or you will have to reinstall your windows environment (it can be resized to no more than 8G but do not make bootable (/boot). Linux will think it should boot from there .... Next you may select to check for bad blocks option. LILO Configuration - UNCHECK Create Boot Disk. Install Lilo boot record on: first sector (/dev/hda5). DO NOT Check MASTER BOOT RECORD. Next. We checked DHCP because we were using Dynamic IP Addresses and clicked "Activate on boot". Time - What ever you're on?? - Root password (for system Adminstrator): root and then enter your password (and don't forget it!!) Authentication Configuration: Click NEXT. SELECTING and INSTALLING PACKAGES: scroll down to bottom and select "everything" (or select own and individually double click every pkg. [we did not include the KERNEL folder pkgs in this]. Next. Monitor Configuration: according to your preferences ... Next WAIT while your Linux installation works to install software pkgs on your partition. EXIT to finish - the machine will eject your CD and reboot . Start - you should now have the choice of Linux or Dos at boot up. select one and have fun. You will want to make a boot disk for Linux - it will be helpful in troubleshooting - Disk 1 & 2 are installation packages - Disk 3 is utilities and may come in handy in troubleshooting. After installation and user id and password authentication type "startx at the prompt to enter the user friendly GUI interface. If windows/dos does not appear to be available after installation, type "cfdisk" and make the hda5 bootable. This should solve your problem ... if not it might be bigger than me ... enjoy!
