linux is an operating system for your computer. it is not called 'the linux' just like 'windows' is not called 'the windows'; just 'Linux', as is is name given to this particular operating system. That said, the difference between Linux and other commercially available operating systems, is that the source code is available for free, so people can study it (known as 'open source'). The fact that Linux is readily available, and open source means that programmers worldwide can "lift the bonnet (hood)" if they find it doesn't work properly, and solve the bugs and make improvements. WHen they do, they email the author of linux, Linus Torvalds, (who made linux available about 10 years ago.) to tell him about it, and he adds the changes to the next release of linux. This is a simplified version of what really goes on, as there are about 50 people -- half of them in the US, and others in Finland, Germany, India, China and Japan -- who are more or less full time contributors to the Linux process. So in effect you have a global village project, with the programmers of the world combining to make the worlds best operating system. Linux is becoming impossible for the world to ignore.
