I know exactly how you feel. You've set up a fantastic website with a product or service that can make you rich beyond your dreams, if only people knew about it. "If you build it- they will come" is a myth. So how do you get the word out? How do you actually get people to visit, and use, your website? There are hundreds of services that promise to swell your traffic by offering: search engine optimization, e-mail mailing lists and other nebulous ways of increasing your visitors. But the dirty little secret is that most of them give you the same result: nothing! If you've been involved with e-commerce for any length of time, then you know exactly what I mean. However, there is a way to get your message into thousands of inboxes, without being deleted. The secret is to make your message a hitchhiker. Typically when people check their emails it's in this order: 1. First they delete all the unwanted mail, which unfortunately probably includes your ad! 2. The second thing they do is open social emails. It could be a joke, a picture, a spiritually uplifting message. Anything that has been forwarded to you by your friends and coworkers. 3. The third thing they do is that they forward these emails to all of their friends and coworkers. And the process is repeated over and over. How far does a social e-mail go? It's hard to say, but is not unlikely that it'll end up in hundreds of thousands of inboxes. These social emails are your free rides across the Internet and with very little effort you can make your ads hitchhikers on the information superhighway.
