Have had little success trying to compile a 2.1.97 kernel, and can't seem to find the problem. The base machine is an AMD K6 233 (a bug fixed one) with 64 mb ram and tons (10 gb) of disc and swap space. The base kernel was a stock redhat 5.0, 2.0.32. We booted off an upgraded kernel 2.1.85, installed the new binutils, and are using gcc 2.7.2.3. We can build a basic monolithic 2.1.97 kernel, but the modular build crashes at different breakpoints. Have also tried ecgs, tried to load gcc 2.8.1 but was told it will trash your system. Seems we still need the g++ libraries, which are unavailable anywhere. We need a > 2.1.95 kernel to use NFS file locking as this linux box will be acting as a database server. Any ideas or comments on similar experiences would be appreciated.
