However during "Thorough Scandisk" it slows up through cluster 8534 to around 8800 of the 35000 clusters available. At first it would just hang... but then it slowly went through w/ a number of "fix errors" and now just moves slowly through the cluster range of 8534...8800. In the interim I tried to fix the problem by reformatting the drive and then running "Thorough Scandisk".... same problem! Then I tried to restore E drive files.... worked fine to a point.... (I think.... a bad cluster area)..... those program that successfully were restored work great. In further inquiry, I ran the Scandisk from Dos prompt..... and I get the following message "Scandisk encountered a data error whiling reading root directory entry number 0 ,,,, was unable to continue scandisk.... did not patch cluster" Also noted, during the "Thorough Scandisk" there shows a number of BAD CLUSTERS ... out there, but the scan stops before it gets to them with the above message. That all the information on the problem I can think of! What does the message mean and how can I work out the problem.... p.s. I deleted all the *.tmp files on the system a couple of days ago...is there a file (?,tmp) needed for the writing of scandisk operations? Any HELP is appreciated..... Mark S. Banwart cpm@isd.net Hi: Scandisk and defrag was designed for a 540 meg hard drive or smaller. Running these on a drive larger than 540 causes bad sectors to be reported plus other errors. Get the new Norton Utilities. This supports EIDE hard drives. Hope this helps HTTP://WWW.NETCOM.CA/~bobkatt/helpme.htnl HTTP://GEOCITIES.COM/ResearchTriangle/1026 Banffbears
