I have had no problems either. I don't have an Athlon, but I build
computers for a living. I just built an Athlon 550, on an Epox K7VA
MB, with PC133 Ram (128MB). What I did first is install an older
video card, I didn't have an ISA card, but the old PCI worked fine.
First thing to do is install everything else, but all the addon cards
meaning no sound, modem or AGP video card. The best thing to do is
find an old video card either ISA, or PCI and when the computer first
boots up tell it to boot with standard VGA drivers for video. After
windows is up and running, run you VIA chipset drivers, Check your MB
bios to see if it's up to date. Just because it's a new board,
doesn't mean the BIOS is up to date. Reboot the system, and make sure
it works ok, then shut down and take the PCI/ISA card out, and add
your AGP video card, and boot the computer. Follow the instructions
for the installation of the video card. Some install at boot up, some
have to be installed with their own installers. Reboot and make sure
it works. If it does, keep adding the parts one at a time and install
the drivers then move to the next card. Also if it's possible don't
put a PCI card right underneath the AGP video card. Skip that first
PCI slot if you can.

P.S. This may take a little while longer, but it will ensure you
won't have problems. If you encounter a problem, just uninstall the
last card and software you installed, and recheck how to install it,
and if it was right, contact the manufacturer of the board and ask for
their help.
