My Slow Computer

Greetings;

This question concerns the speed of an old 486 running Win95. I know, why
not get a better, newer computer?, well, I have. The 486 has its qualities
that make it worth saving if I can find the source of its sluggishness.

The oddest thing of all is that when I am running diagnostic and parasite
detectors, the speed of the machine is incredible and this is also true of
system maintenance programs such as Scandisk and Defrag. As soon as I
return to normal OS routines, the 486 shifts down to a low first gear.

I can find no trace of spyware, adware, viruses, Trojans or any resource
demanding transients. I'm puzzled and need help.

The system is Win95 B, 23M Ram, 266MHz Processor, Packard Bell Multimedia
550. Adaware reports that an average of 9 processes are running at any
given time.

Any help at all, Randy Gross

What are the nine processes running and do you need all of them

At your inquiry I took a real close look at the running processes and
discovered two separate instances of Explorer.exe running in parallel. I
never caught that before. I guess I expected to see an instance and
mentally blocked, ignored the second. The remaining processes are:

kernal32.dll
msgsrv32.exe
mprexe.exe
mmtask.tsk
explorer.exe
systray.exe
iexplore.exe
rnaapp.exe
tapiexe.exe
cmmon32.exe
explorer.exe

I have a startup manager installed but none of these processes appear in
its lineup. A good startup manager, it appears, is the place to start to
resolve this problem. At this point, I have no Idea how to disable the
second instance of Explorer.exe without shutting down the system.

Please help,

Randy
