Open letter to muslims

The Arab and Muslim leaders all across America are pleading for
Americans not to attack or blame Muslims for the destruction wreaked
upon America on Black Tuesday, September the eleventh. They say that
Muslims are peaceful people, that in fact Islam means peace. They say
they abhor such attacks. They say many things. But the acts of
terrorism perpetrated by people of the Muslim faith are now too
numerous and too involved to be ascribed solely to individual acts of
madness.

We in America, as diverse as we are, share one thing in common, we
tend to judge people not on their words, but on their actions. You
may bluster and threaten, growl and foam at the mouth, but because you
never fail to aid those in need or feed those without food, you are
not called mean, instead you will be known affectionately as a good
person, and with a smile called a 'softie'. Declare yourself twice
every hour the nicest person in the world, and then kick a dog, and
you will be known by any of several unprintable epithets.

The evening before the attack on New York and the Pentagon, some 300
Muslim demonstrators marched outside of the Alley Theater in Houston,
Texas chanting "Death to Rushdie". Referring to author Salmon
Rushdie, the scheduled speaker of the evening. I know of no one who
would call such actions peaceful.

Israel over the years has claimed that we are wrong if we believe that
terrorists can be placated. We refused to believe that. They claimed
that we do not understand that the Muslims that are blowing up
innocent civilians in Israel are doing so for religious reasons as
much or more than territorial ones. We forget the massacre at the
Munich Olympics. We forget the bombing of a passenger jet over
Lockerbie, Scotland. We watched on TV while leaders of Muslim nations
and territories denounced the attack on America, told of their sadness
about the loss of so many innocent people - yet at the same time the
very people they claimed to represent celebrated and danced in the
streets when word was broadcast of the attack on the United States. On
and on the list goes and grows.

The onus is now with the Muslims - the Muslim nations and the
individual muslims - to prove their words with actions. Stop those
amongst you who do those acts. Stop supporting terrorists directly.
Stop simply standing mutely by. You must now prove to the rest of us
by your actions that you are not the enemy, that you are what you
claim.

Unfair, un-American, unconstitutional, bigots you may shout. Shout
all you will, but by not acting in the manner you claim you have
forfeited the trust of Americans - it is up to you to earn it back.
Act quickly, we do not as yet hate you, but you have lost our trust,
and sadly hatred seems to follow closely on the heels of mistrust.

One apologist was quoted as saying that all Muslims were really after
was to get the attention of America. Well you have it, but I doubt it
will be what you were hoping for.
