Dev Med Child Neurol 1984;26:73-80

A study of 13,135 children all born between the 5th and 11th of April =
1970 in Great Britain, representing 80% of all children born during that =
week.

80% were evaluated on their fifth birthday =B1 one month.

Information:

     breastfed or not=20

     exclusively or partially=20

     length of time of breastfeeding (<1 month, 1-3 months, =3D3months)=20

     any language problems=20

     height, head circumference (measured by the researcher)=20

     tests:vocabulary=20

visual and motor coordination

behaviour

psychologic state of the mother





Results:  After adjustment for socioeconomic factors:=20
     Children who had been breastfed had a significant advantage over =
those who hadn't in all areas.=20
     This advantage increased with the length of breastfeeding and =
exclusivity of breastfeeding.=20


There were no differences in incidence of language problems.
