Since Telus bought PCS Clearnet, service in sections
of the USA have gone completely down the tubes.

A TELUS Service rep here in Victoria admitted to
all the technical troubles and that a solution
could be a long way off.

Not very helpful when you are in America
a lot, and your former CLEARNET phone
used to work perfectly til TELUS got
involved..........

Coffeedude,

Sanyo SCP-4000 is a Dual-mode, Dual-band (1.9GHz CDMA /
800MHz AMPS) handset. Please note the following:

1. If you have been offered to upgrade the firmware / PRL,
make sure it is done properly. Reports suggest it may take
twice to do right.

2. Check the version of the firmware and the PRL (Preferred
Roaming List). The current PRL is 09 or 42011 and 38003 will
be fine in the West. This is important when you are
traveling across the country and go South of the border.
With so many changes in the wireless communication sector,
roaming partners and the service access keep changing.

3. Be aware the fact that there are many places in North
America only having 800MHz CDMA service. If your handset is
not a Tri-mode, Dual-band model, you will very likely be
stuck with Analog service at best or even no service at all.

FIDO now automatically enables US roaming, at only .20US/minute including LD
:-)

It does not include long distance. The Fido roaming rate is a fabulous
deal at 20 cents a minute U.S., but it does not include long distance.
Given that long distance is only 10 cents CDN per minute, billed by the
second (after the first 30 seconds) it's still a great deal. With the
current exchange rate, expect to pay about 31 cents CDN a minute for local
calls and add ten cents CDN for long distance calls when in the U.S. Note
that it also uses up minutes in your minute bucket so add 20 cents a
minute to each of those prices if you manage to go over. The range,
therefore, is anywhere from 31 cents to 71 cents depending on your
situation. Considering that Telus' standard (PCS) U.S. roaming rate is 95
cents a minute CDN, and $1.45 a minute for long distance calls, Fido's
rates are extremely inexpensive (and, interestingly, better than many of
the so-called one-rate plans you can get at lower. But do understand that
airtime and long distance are not included in the 20 cent U.S. per minute
rate.

I hope that Telus at least includes airtime in their extremely high
U.S. roaming rates, but I wasn't able to find this information on their
web site.

check here:

it does include long distance.

See above:
Roaming rates

With Fido, calls made in the U.S. cost just 20 US a minute: a single rate
that is simple and affordable and applies to all the local and long-distance
calls you make within North America. And since roaming is activated
automatically for all Fido customers, you don't have to contact Customer
Service before crossing the border.

Coverage is still quite limited in the USA, depending on where one goes:

Fascinating. You're quite right that it appears to include long
distance. Wow... the text they added to my invoice when they first
dropped the rate suggested that long distance was still separate (which
was fine by me as, at ten cents CDN a minute, it was still a great deal).
But if it also includes LD, then I'm simply stunned.

Limited on 'where one goes'..? Hmmm.. it works for me :-)
You want the same footprint of operation? Sounds jealous to me :-)

Nope, not jealous at all. If Fido continues boosting it's coverage and
retains these features and PRICE, well...hell, I will switch too. It's all
personal preference. If one is completely satisfied with the coverage,
service, and price, then why change?
