I can only tell you _my_ experience: When I get a SM,
the phone gives a signal and says "Message Arrived. 
Read now?" When I push "YES" it shows:

           New
        07-Jan-00
      From: Name [7 characters plus a "->" symbol]

When reading (pushing "YES"), you can complete the name 
with left arrow.

My 688 at the same place says: Number.
