Looking to do extended travel into Boneo Island and I understand that major town in Indonesia and Malaysia has GSM coverage but the bulk of the time will be spent in the virgin jungle. Anyone have any recommendation for a phone that will do both GSM and Satelite coverage that is also portable enough. if the unit can do datalink via a PDA or Librato sub-notebook for email checking would be added bonus. any advise welcome

I think they may still turn up on ebay. Other suggest is to just call Iridum and find out what the current offering is. You may be able to rent one...

Try http://www.aces.co.id They have a GSM phone with regional satellite coverage. The handset is Ericsson, it should be PDA compatible with a data cable. Garuda had completely slipped my mind. It would be a very good regional solution as long as you don't need satellite service outside its limited footprint. The shame is that Garuda was not developed in concert with Thuraya. As it is they seem to have two incompatible handsets. Had they cooperated they could have had a single handset that could cover about 2/3 of the globe. -- Donald R. What is a Thuraya ? I believe Garuda's footprint covers from ASEAN all the way to Beijing, Taiwan, and Tokyo with multiple transponders. "Donald R. right marketing strategy though, they cover SthEastAsia allthe way to China, west to Parkistan. And considering most of these Asian region are not wired up or too costly to wire up, SatPhone for those who need to travel into those region is one true option. thanx for the reply have u a link to Thuraya bsa "Donald R. www.thuraya.com Thuraya is a sort of Arab version of Garuda. One big geosynchronous satellite parked at 44 E providing satellite service to W. Asia, N. Africa and Europe. Small dual-mode handsets, like ACeS/Garuda but different manufacturer. They just went active a short time back. -- Donald R.
