6100 .mid files: Unable to open file...

what causes the phone to display this message?
i used nokia's sound converter to play around with the polyphony values, and
it plays back as i want it to from inside the program, but after i send it
to my 6100, it doesnt playback from in the phone.
i have .mid files that work fine with both larger file size, and with a
higher calc cumulative polyphony value...
anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it? happens with a number of
tones...

cheers,

daniel.

AFAIK, it's not about "longer" MIDI Files, but about "bigger" MIDI Files.

The Series 40 Phones (7210/6610/6100/...) support MIDI-Files up to about
8kB. (I have 20kB Midi's that work fine, but that's the exception...)

Files bigger than 7.5kB tend not to play...

I agree with Alistair, it's not the size of the ringtone that's the problem.
I think it's something to do with the SF-Midi configuration of the file. The
computer understands it, but the phone doesn't and views it as corrupt. I've
found that by deleting the SF-Midi configurations the file *sometimes*
works.

However, there is a limit on the size of the file that you can download via
WAP, AFAIK this limit is 8k.

I think the actual reason is the number of "instruments" in the midi file, i
think i read the 6610 only supports 4 instruments per midi file.

True, the 6610 and various other series 40 phones only support 4 channel
polyphony (what you refered to as 4 instruments is in fact 4 notes being
played at the same time, you can't have a piano playing a five note chord
for example, it'll only play 4 of the notes). However, if you upload a
ringtone with more than 4 channels the phone will automatically play the 1st
4 only.

I think the SF-Midi instructions, which tells the phone which channels and
how many notes to play, is corrupted and the phone can't read it to play it.

wrong.
you can edit the polyphony values and have a lot more than 4 instruments in
the file... just cant have them all playing in one go.

20kb.

There is more than 1 midi file standard: Standard midi and Extended
midi - with different number of channels and using different numbered
channels for drums. Could have something to do with it.
