When a program wants to access the cd, it calls mscdex which is a tsr (terminate & stay resident program). It might be called a driver except that it is not loaded in the same place in memory as the regular drivers. ie. it is not a part of the chain of drivers that get loaded in order in memory at bootup. It is loaded into program memory space. mscdex figures out what the program is asking for then calls the driver for the cd. CALLS means that it finds the driver code already in memory or loads it to memory then and begins to read it line by line and execute the code If you send an eject command from the program to mscdex, it figures out this request and then asks the driver to eject the cd. etc. It does this by identifying the driver from the driver chain. This part of the mscdex autoexec entry identifies which driver it needs to call. /D:MSCD0001 -- It could be /D:MSCD -- or /D:MSCD0002 or whatever you want to call it. If loading only one cd driver you could simply designate it /D:MSCD and it would work ok. To figure out which driver to use, mscdex checks the chain of drivers and finds one with the correct name. ie /D:MSCDxxxx then runs the code for that driver in the process passing the request (whatever it is, play-eject etc) to that driver. mscdex.exe is pretty much a generic tsr program altho you should use the latest one you have. The driver however is especially written for the cd altho many will interchange and there are generic drivers that will work with most cd's. The driver is loaded from config.sys and must have the same /d:mscd in it's command line. ie. the /d:mscd must match in both autoexec and config.sys. It gets loaded and MSCDxxxx is it's identifier so that mscd.exe can find it when it needs to run the driver code. tech232 / ChasG The driver is loaded "Alabasta" <destabi@excite.com> wrote in message news:9a1hqe$925$1@lust.ihug.co.nz... > Here's a real newbie question I guess a guru here may be able to help. > > I am loading win95 from cd rom and thought I had a startup disk that would > allow this .
