Okay, while we're on the topic of CDs and ripping and all . . . how
does MP3 (a lossy format) compare with simply playing the CD into a
A/D converter and effectively going Digital -> Analog -> Digital? As 
far as I know, there's *no* copy protection mechanism that'll prevent 
this.  

Has anyone done this? How does the final quality compare to straight
ripping?
