Like I said originally, if you have to do a clean reinstall of Win, you have to reinstall all the apps too. You're no better off with them on a separate partition. The original claim that 'it makes it easier to trouble shoot, reformatting and installing windows becomes easier' is just plain wrong. And you're stuck with the problem that the drive letters change if you put another hard drive in the system which has a primary dos partition on it. You have to uninstall and reinstall all those apps again. You dont if the boot drive just has one partition. > reinstall windows, reinstall software, hey, where's my report? crap > i forgot to backup my word documents folder, off the "Documents" > tree in my extremely huge c: partition, this wouldn't never have happened > if i'd have made a partition for my documents and apps would it have?" Thats only a justification for a separate partition for the data, not the apps. And it makes a hell of a lot more sense just to keep the data in a data tree under the root of the boot partition and back that up properly so you dont go into wrist slashing mode when the hard drive dies, as some inevitably do. Its normally quite feasible to back up data and just accept the fact that a full reinstall of Win and the apps is going to be needed if the hard drive dies. And with a single partition boot drive, it becomes much more convenient to have a smaller older hard drive as a backup location for your data tree on the main hard drive, giving you less hassles on a hard drive failure. And no farting around with drive letters changing when you add it.
