Help on compression

I'm starting to investigate the possibilities about compressing.
I'm working on a project in which images have to be compressed in
order to transfer it via modem or other medium. There are some
compressing methods available, LZW, run length, huffman etc.
My question is this which one is best for compressing images or
is there anything better.
There is one condition: the compression time has to be (sort of)
equal to the decompression time.

Please send some information about these methods.

Thanks in advance,
                    E. van Egmond
