Handling of large floating values may differ by database vendor.  With DB2
Universal Database 5.2, I created such a table as:

db2 create table bignumb (col1 float(10))

and selected the large value using the BIGINT function:

db2 select bigint(col1) from bignumb

I could also created it with BIGINT:

db2 create table bignumb (col1 bigint)
