Table is read only?!?

Master & detail queries using cached updates for editing

I am getting the rather non-sensical message, "Table is read only," when
inserting records, and I can't figure out what is going on. Here is what the
program is doing:

In order to insert the master records, return the new identity field, and
then insert the detail records, I use the OnUpdateRecord events of both
queries. Database.ApplyUpdates([MasterQuery]) is first called. This inserts
all the needed records to the database and stores the new identity value in
a global variable. It then calls DetailQuery.ApplyUpdates and
DetailQuery.CommitUpdates, so that the detail records are applied within the
same transaction.

When I step through the code, it gets all the way through all the above
processes. Then as I step from "end;" on the master query's OnUpdateRecord
event handler, it raises the EDBEngineError, "Table is read only."

There are no read only tables involved. How can I get an error on that line
of "code" anyway? Is there something wrong with the way I'm going about
things?

Thanks a million for any suggestions!
