A couple of questions about Web Publisher, ODBC, and databases...

Hi all, got a slight problem and was wondering if there is anyone that could
help me...

I'm working on a database right now, looking to put this database on a
website where it is searchable and all... and I got the book "Web Databse
Development Step by Step" by Buyens... Chapter 1, Part 1, page 12... and
yup, you guessed it... I'm stuck already...

#1 - I tried to install Web Publisher from my Windows 98 disk, it was
installing fine until the last moments when I got an error pop up message at
the "Updating MTS registry entries..." stage.

[An unkown error occurred while making MTS specific changes to the system
registry.

Error Code = 0x80004005]

Then another pop up box followed:

[Window Setup:

Setup of "Transsaction Server Core Components" failed. The specific error
code os 0xfee670.

Setup will continue but the component may not function properly.]

After that, the setup continues, and then after the setup was completed, I
got this error message:

[Microsoft Transaction Server setup was not completed successfully.]

After that it asked to restart the PC, I did so and it seemed ok... but
something must have went wrong, does anyone know what the problem was?

#2 - The reason I say that something must have went wrong, is because when I
tried to go through some of the exercises in the book, I simply could not
get ANY of the supposed results to appear. Some of the ASP pages that were
meant to show some records just showed an empty page... it also states in
the book that for these pages to work in the PC environment (as opposed to
the actual web environment) I would need to place them in executable
folders... I am guessing that you make a folder executable by right clicking
its properties and then go to "Web Sharing" tab and select "Share this
folder" and check the "Executable" box... is this correct?

#3 - I have done all of the above... but still getting a blank page... does
anyone out there have this book? If so, can you tell me what it is that I
could be doing wrong?

#4 - I am working the database in MS Access, the 2 requirement is that the
final product needs to be in 1) Hardcopy paper format; and 2) CD/Web format.
The other requirement would be of course easy maintenance... is working in
MS Access wise? Or would you recommend something else?

#5 - Back to the book thing... it mentions a lot on ODBC and how wonderful
blah blah blah... final question(s)... what is it? how would it (final web
product) differ, if any, on Macs? I am just a little concious that this is
all very PC based, but then again, it IS just development, I'd imagine the
final thing would be cross platformed... also, the more I read, the more I
feel I need to learn ASP and XML... your views?

I found one database where it is almost exactly what I want... can someone
please tell me if I could use Access to creat something like it?

I would appreciate all your feedback, I'm really up against a really strong
steel wall here... many thanks in advance.

Hope to hear from you all soon.

It's difficult to say for sure what is wrong, but try a simple test.

Navigate to the following folder
   C:\inetpub\wwwroot

Add a new folder and name it TestASP

Put any sample ASP page(s) in that folder. If you need an example,
then download my datasheet example from my site
 http://c1082797-a.aurora1.co.home.com/datafast/articles/dsexample1.htm

You may need to set permissions on something ... but I forget how it
works in Win 98. If you use my example code, then you can test it
by pointing your browser to the following link (same on ALL machines)

http://localhost/TestASP/EditAuthors.asp

Not sure if this will solve your problems, but it should give you something
new to try. I wouldn't worry about the MTS error messages. Win 98
doesn't have MTS so of course it will error out. I vaguely remember the
same messages when I last installed on Win 98, and it didn't interfere
with my ASP stuff.

Thanks for that little tip, I'll test it out on Monday when I come back into
the office [it's Friday today... :-)]...

As regards to the MTS earlier, I was directed to the Microsoft site and went
to Knowledge Base section, downloaded a newer version of the Mtssetup.dll,
and uninstalled and reinstalled MS Personal Web Server... with no error
messages... so I think I now have a good version of PWS on the machine...

But I'll give that ASP trick a little try when I get back to the office on
Monday, and I'll let you know how I get on.

Much obliged for your help and tip Danny, have a nice weekend
