web & database I dont know how...do you?

Hi there,

I am trying to find a simple but decent way to get a database working on a
website. I would like to know how people can add stuff into the database by
visiting my website and entering data and also how people visiting my site
can search this database by selecting drop down menu's or search fields. And
with that I would like the results to show up in a way that I like, meaning
the style colours shapes..so the presentation. Just like with if you make a
static webpage.

I know how to make a webpage and I know how to make a database but the
connection between the two is something that I am trying to learn.

Can anybody explain to me how to do such a thing without spending bucks or
as little bucks as possible please?

I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance for helping and / or reading this.

Kind regards

Co

ASP is the answer

I bought the book begining ASP Databases by John Kauffman (WROX press -
www.wrox.com) and found this book very helpful. See some results in my
webpage (under construction - sorry!) www.access4me.co.uk
By the way - any constructive comments on this website greatly appreciated.

It's not that easy. You could start with ASP pages. I've got
a couple of articles at my web site that explain how you can
create a "datasheet" to an Access table.

If you really wnat go nuts with the Perl and SQL try

slashcode.com

You don' thave to run it, but it's free source so you can take it apart and
see how it works.

Yeah I want to try something like that. I mean asp needs ms servers if I am
correct and I want something that can work on almost everything.

There are many ways or technologies to create web-oriented databases,
as you heard before ASP (Activer Server Pages). ASP is an extension
of IIS, is not a programming language, but a technology that uses VBS
(VB script), (JBS Java script) and of course HTML technolgy. Since you
know some HTML and some databases, you shoudn't have a problem
learning this technology.

ASP pages maybe created in any text editor including notepad. As you
imagin the way the browser knows the code is VBS, JBS or HTML is by
the tags you use, for instance VBS tags are <% and %>, assuming that
you already have a database created, one of your first step is to
create a connection to that database. There are two ways to create
connections to databases in ASP: DSN and DSNless connection, I always
prefer DSNless conections. In my opionion ASP is great, the only
problem is that is OS dependant or for that matter, web server
dependant, because it may only be use with IIS.

Another hot technology right now is PHP, PHP is shaking all other
programming languages in the internet tech arena. It was especially
created for the internet and it is not OS dependant. I always see it
matching with Apache web servers, but I think it may be used with IIS.
One of the best feature is that it is free and there are lots of
open-source programs for this language. One that I love is PHPSHOP,
which you may find at PHPSHOP.ORG. Is like like C, you must tell her
how to do every thing.

Another techonogy you find right with your access application is DAP
(Data Access pages), DAP is the mother of simplicity, you can create
data access pages in a minute with the same skill you use when you
create forms and reports. But DAP has its feasibilities and
constraints; is OS dependant like ASPs and even more, the clients must
have a MS Office license to view them. I would only recomend it for
intranets, if you would like to DAPs in a internet, it could get
really ugly. Especially if you are using MS 2000.

None of these technologies are difficult, if you are entusiastic and
motivated.

                             Hipolito

Yes I want to go for php as it is open source and it can go on almost any
server unlike ASP. I have tried a bit of ASP before but because of the
platform dependency I would like to go for PHP now.

Do you know HTML and SQL or have you been using graphical tools to
create web pages and databases? Knowing HTML and SQL is important if
you're going to use PHP or BRL. With PHP, it helps a lot to have C
programming experience, as it has a lot of syntax quirks in common with
that language.

You can set up a database-driven site at no charge on BRL Cabaret. For
details see the web site below.

P.S. The best newsgroup for your kind of question is
comp.infosystems.www.databases. I'll direct followups there.

Yes indeed that's why I am busy PHP and my SQL trying things that
way....open source and more reach for free.

You could try a web native database application like:

http://www.super-tracker.com.au

Lots of effort has gone into producing user friendly web based data
entry/ search/report screens.

Nigel.

check out http://stage.learnasp.com/learn/

ASP is completely free, and the site tells you everything you will
ever need to know in plain english, from what software you need and
how to install it (and where to get it), basics of the language, good
programming techniques etc...

I can't let this one go by without plugging our software:
Webdata - the first EASY database for the web.

It self installs on most web servers and the admin can customize
the database design, and graphical layout all with only a browser
and a mouse. Webdata Classic is a self-contained Perl flat-file
database, and Webdata Pro is relational and uses MySQL as
its backend. Both programs feature image uploading, text file import,
templates for easy design, and members that can modify their
own listings.
