Greetings,

I've just been working with a Shark Leopard 56K flex faxmodem, Speakerphone
model during the past 3 days. In general, I like it (esp. for $34!)

Here are some observations:
P/N 102-0018 Rev A - Rev B are rockwell chipset modems ("normal modems")

There is a new box on the shelf which looks almost identical to the old,
but I think it is Rev C, and now uses the Motorola chip and is a "Win Modem".

I have a Rev B board. I spoke to Techsupport for the first time on Thursday
and the fellow answered immediately (no waiting!) in the middle of the day
and was extremely knowlegeable at a tech level.

In order to get Win95 plug N play to recognize the modem (on some systems),
it may be necessary to use REGEDIT to delete the old key. The key is:

          [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\ISAPNP\SMM00B1]

Obviously, this "SMM" key is for the Shark Multimedia only, but other
modems will use a key in the same plug-in-play area.

After the key is deleted (and the shark modem has been deleted from the
CONTROLPANEL|MODEM list), then go to the CONTROLPANEL|SYSTEM|DEVICE MANAGER
and hit REFRESH ....Win95 will now detect your modem and ask for drivers
if it doesn't find them already on the hard drive. Double check
the MODEM list to see if it appears properly, set up Modem Properties, etc.

There should be no need to reboot. This procedure solves a problem I
had when applications either couldn't find the modem, or they returned
an error such as, "Couldn't open COM port". When I was changing drivers
and term/DUN applications frequently, I would get this error, however
now that my configuration has stabalized, the modem appears to be
working great. Oh, I installed DUN 1.2 (which took a few reboots), and
this seems to have signficantly reduced my modem errors at 28800 and 33600.

Now, the only problem I am currently having with the modem, is that
it does not appear to notify my voice mail software when the phone rings.
I'm not doing anything fancy like distinctive ringing.... it just isn't
sending a software signal to the Voice mail application. I've tried
Shark's own DIALTONE vmail software (which seems reasonable) and I've
also used Pacific Image's SuperVoice v4.0 in TAPI mode. Neither of
these programs detect a ring.

I'm quite sure this is a shark problem, because I previously used
SuperVoice with a Cardinal modem (in non-TAPI mode) and an on-screen
counter would update with each telephone ring.

I hope to have this problem resolved by calling SHARK tech support
tomorrow.

Cheers,
~Keith...
