What is the bets modem. I am upgrading from a Winmodem and would like one
that will work with Linux and Windows.

Can be PCI, USB or serial (or both)

Most folks agree that the best modem is a 3Com USR Robotics Courier
V.everything. The are internal or external and significantly more more
money that most other modems, say $250-300.

Next best are full hardware modems from 3Com, S3 Diamond, and possibly
Zoom. Most manufacturers are very vague about which of their modems are
full hardware, which are "controllerless", and which are fully software.

In the US, the Diamond SupraExpress is a full hardware ISA modem that
sells for $70 or so. A bargain. 3Com offerings are usualy a bit more
around $100.

The modem business changes from time to time. Diamond was purchased by
S3 recently with no apparent change in products. 3Com has decided that
there is not enough rapid growth in modems to satisfy stockholders, so
there modem business is being sold. What this means we don't know
presently.

Here are some web sites that will help:

(This ine deals with Linus compatibility.)

I am also looking for a modem to replace my USR winmodem. I am
upgrading my system adding linux and configuring a dual boot with WIN95
and Mandrake Linux 7.0. I would like the modem to be full hardware with
minimal effect on the CPU on my computer. I was looking at the
SupraExpress 56i - 56k v.90 int ISA speakerphone modem offered through
www.elinux.com at $80.

"The SupraExpress 56 Speakerphone combines award-winning 56K
performance with a high-quality, full-duplex speakerphone. This
complete fax, voicemail & speakerphone solution features the 56K ITU
standard (V.90), along with K56flex for widespread Internet Service
Provider support."

I would like the modem to be highly resistant to noise with overall
good average connection speed. I have problems with my winmodem USR
sportster 33.6 dropping the connection from time to time. The modem
also would need to have fax capability. I would prefer a internal modem
although I would go with a external if needed.

Anyone know whether the SupraExpress 56i - 56k v.90 int ISA
speakerphone modem would be ideal? Any other fax/modems that I should
check out?

Thanks in advance,

I would stick with the supraexpress, but get the 56e. That is the external
version of the same modem. It is a great modem. In fact if you have the
money and another phone line spare, get 2 of them and I am not sure about
doing it in linux (I use my 56e with redhat 6.2), but in windows, you can
get the proprietary shotgun software and double your connection speed. I
get a connection rate of about 48'000 and a download speed of up to 8 kbps,
which is theoretically impossible, but I think my ISP is good.
