I have a Gateway G6-266 with a built-in Telepath 56K modem. I also have an NEC SuperScript 870 printer. Every time I print anything from my computer, it disables my modem. That's true whether I'm already online (I hear the "click" of being booted off, even though I still see the time being racked up on the Dial-Up Networking stats monitor), or whether I print first and then try to go online (the computer says it cannot detect the modem -- same for when I try to dial up again after having been booted off). Either way, I have to reboot to get my modem working. I looked for an IRQ conflict, by my modem is on 4 and my printer is on 7, so that's doesn't seem to be the problem to me. Someone who knows suggested that it may be because I'm using an ECP Printer Port, which I understand was a temporary standard and may have caused several problems as such. (Not sure if this is one.) The "boot off" happens exactly at the point of the beginning of printing, so I know it's related somehow. Anybody have any ideas? I really appreciate the help. Please post, do not reply by mail. Thanks. Chuck

Are you using a PCI modem? If so, it IS your ECP printer, I believe. PCI devices oftentimes share IRQs and, even though it'll show you (in device mgr) that it's using a certain IRQ, it'll share another with another device when necessary (like when it's printing!) Get another (parallel-ported) printer and your problem will be no longer. By the way, what's the cable modem problem???
