hi there,i have an AMD athlon xp.1.47 ghz on an epox 8kha+ mobo, and my
case is the antec sx1030. when i first booted up it was pretty noisy, and i
guessed it was the fans so i went to quietpc.com and bought 2 new fans, put
them in and it is still as noisy as before! does anyone have any tips or
ideas as to how i could mkae this pc quieter as it is pretty loud,
reminiscent of a space ship taking off everytime i boot up!
it is getting annoying and i think its giving me headahes to any help with
this would be greatly appreciated!
thanks in advance

is your case on a hardwood floor? maybe this would cause loud vibrations?

Poke a stick into your power supply fan and see if the noise stops.
Power Supply fans are usually the source of the most noise.

Fans are the main noise maker. Quite a few fans these days can be run at a
variable speed - they usually run at a pretty slow rpm (and hence aren't as
loud). Only when they need to do they spin up to full speed. Did you
actually buy this type of fan, or just some ordinary ones?

Were they just case fans? Chances are you can survive without them. Also,
the fan in your PSU is noisy. So you can buy a quiter PSU. Oh, the little
fan on the northbridge on your mobo can be unplugged. It probably isn't very
loud, but mine started to die a whirring (loud) death soon after I bought my
mobo. I just unplugged it and it has been fine.

I would disagree with unplugging the northbridge fan. Yes, it isn't
"needed", but the fan barely makes any noise at all and it makes no
sense to not keep it running. Most of the time, the noisiest fan is
either the PS fan or the CPU fan (a 7000 RPM delta fan is quite loud).

I've got a 7000rpm Dragon Orb processor fan and that makes a constant noise.
I only live with it because the case is under my desk and the TV loud :)

Just don't shove it in too far or too hard. And use something that
doesn't conduct electricity just in case you manage to touch something
inside the power supply.

First step in eliminating noise is to find out where it is coming from.

60-80mm adapter with a papst 80mm fan or a 60-92 with a enermax variable
fan will do the trick.

Sorry,

forget to mention that the best way to a computer quiet is to stick to a
pentium

not worth all the hassle that i went through to keep the temperature down
and the dam thing quiet

Wrong. The _best_ way to make a computer _quiet_ is to use a Cyrix
processor that requires no fan. Of course it's _slow_, but it's
_quiet_. You can have any two of fast, quiet, and easy.

Most people wouldn't consider an empty box to be a computer. Those who do
obviously have an empty box attatched to their neck.

The little cpu fan is usually the noisiest in my experience, it is small and
spins very fast which = loud! replace it with a larger fan (they turn slower
to move the same air volume) such as a 80mm case fan and you should get a
noise reduction.

I shoved in a 7806 into my PSU's fan on my 486. The whole computer was
DEAD silent, after the hard drives went to sleep.

Several months later, the PC started hanging randomly. Upon closer
inspection, the enamel on one of the coils in the PSU got too hot and
cracked, resulting in arcing that probably destabilised the power going
to the motherboard causing errors.

oh well...

After that I just shoved the whole PC in a cupboard and ran the leads out
through a cutout. Worked beautifully. Makes the room look neater while heating
up my clothes. :)

well, ill take a different angle then simply upgrading the fans

have your tried insulating the case walls with a foam or something, i would
recommened the stuff that they pack mobo's in, it non conductive/static,
impossibly cheap, use your own or go to a computer store and if they arent
tight arses they would give you some for free

if that doesnt work, which i know it will work a bit ( that bit might be
enough or not) head for some low rpm, high CPM rating fans, one onf the cpu
and one blowing the air out the case and one coming in, and you should be
right

Simple follow goverment policy, buy some extra long cables, and hide the
tower somewhere, i another room, cubbord etc, provided it has anought
ventalation
or go and build an old 486 with a good open powersupply, no fans ;-)

When I have all the parts my experiment is:

Silent 20 cfm 80mm in nose blowing in.
Silent 20 cfm 80mm in back blowing out.
Air-tight 60 to 80 adapter on heat sink.
Flexible 4" diameter heat duct with aluminum tape from heat sink to rear
fan.
To fit the duct, I may need to trim the ears off the corners of the inner
sides of the fans.

If the cpu cooling is ok, then the power supply should be the loud thing
afterwards.
