Sounblaster Recognition

I am helping a friend upgrade his system, which now consists of:
AMD Duron 900
Gigabyte GA7-DXR BIOS F6, AMD chipset.
256MB DDR RAM
Voodoo3 3000 16MB video
SB Live Value
300w ATX power
Sony CD-RW
Toshiba DVD
Windows ME

I cannot get the system to utilise the soundcard, Wiindows recognises it and
loads the software yet on rebooting the computer has no sound. There is no
volume icon in the tray and in the Sounds and Multimedia section in Control
Panel there is no recording or playback device listed. In System properties
all devices are listed as working properly, no exclamation marks whatsoever.
I have tried re-installing, the card, it used IRQ5 then IRQ11 but the result
was the same. I then tried using the onboard Creative sound and again there
was nothing. I am completely baffled.

Any advice appreciated

disable the on-board soundcard in either the bios or on the motherboard
(preferable) or in device manager.

it sounds like the computer's reverting to the onboard soundcard and
ignoring the new one.

As I recall correctly... This motherboard doesn't have a jumper to disable
the onboard sound. Be damn sure you disable the various sound settings in
the Bios (legacy, game port, etc. etc.)

Open the creative mixer and then right above the main volume control you
will see a red
plus sign. Click on it and make sure that the digital output is not checked.
If it is this is why
you have no sound.

Should fix the problem.

If not go to the control panel/multimedia/and put and check the mixer
settings in there to make
sure that everything is turned on.

This is what I thought but all bios settings are disabled for sound. I
can't even get the onboard sound to work and I have a GA7-ZX myself so i've
done this before. I'm wondering if a startup file is disabling
Soundblaster, but why does it appear Ok in Device Manager.
