Anyone have ideas on why an Aptiva 2161 would randomly turn itself on?
There are no IBM software applications installed (Ring Central etc.),
Rapid Resume is disabled in the Sure Path Utility, requiring the on/off
button to be used to power off (Wake up on ring would not stay disabled
when I left Rapid Resume BIOS enabled)
I do not have any fax software installed and I have a dedicated PC Phone
line with no phone attached, and "easy call" is disabled.
Win 98 power management is set to "never" do anything........
This "auto on" glitch has occurred 3 times in the last 3 weeks after 2 years
operation.
Something going strange with the in case power supply ?

i would personally check on the whereabouts of one Keitgh Martin. he's been
known to do things like this. i wouldn't put it past him to be sneaking
into your house, sniffing your dirty laundry, and then turning your computer
on.

heck, how do we know that this isn't really keith posting as you - he's been
known to do that before too.

ps - i've heard of the problem you are referring to, and i'm just trying to
remember the solution.....

Yeah, I'm cross posting!

In Win98 do this -

Open Control Panel,
System,
device manager,
system devices,
advanced power management support,
properties,
settings,
Choose force apm 1.0 mode,
Click ok.
Reboot.
Enter the Setup Utility/BIOS with F1 at next boot up and disable wakeup
on ring (one last time)

If that doesn't do it.. disconnect Wake Up on Ring cable in case.. it's
the 2pin one.

But if that doesn't work, unhook that WOR cable.. even a dedicated line
gets marketing calls. I bet that'll fix it.

Sounds more like its wakeup on ring turning the system on when you
have got a call or two on the dedicated line, by wrong numbers etc.

Thanks Phil and Teal, I will try the Win 98 APM thing. On a triple check, the
only two things left as Enabled are:
A. In "Rom Shadowing" E800-EFFF (Rapid Resume), and
B. In "Rapid Resume" the on/off button mode is set to "Power Off"
(the only other option is "Rapid Resume")
It is almost like spinning in ever decreasing circles.
(I think I will leave the "Keith" thing alone) :-)
