Sharront, pick Crucial for RAM. The best quality at affordable price.

I'm also considering buying the Enermax PS, but it seems I cannot find any
online store that will ship to my country (Slovenia, Europe). So if you are
buying online, can you please tell me where at.

Thank you
Matija

I've read some great reviews about MSI's mobo's with the AMD 760 (750?)
chipset, maybe you should look into those... no xperience personally but I'm
hoping to get one with a 1GHz Thunderbird.

I'd say stick to win98(SE) until you get something that requires Me, and you
require that program.

Sounds like a good combination.
Have you thought of buying an A7V133 instead of an A7V for future
upgradability ? Also, you might get your CPU to work at 133MHz FSB and gain
a few percent performance (works well here).
I agree with the other poster about the Crucial RAM. Get CAS2 speed grade,
it hardly costs any more. Only get the best stuff. My own experiences with
Crucial are excellent.

Your system looks great! I'll bet anything that you will kick yourself later
for not spending the extra $20-$30 to get the Abit KT7A Raid though.

Try and get something a little newer, I always go for the best board, you
said yourself the cpu is to be upgraded

Crucial CAS2 PC133 from crucial.com don't go for 128, 256 is only 70.

Why not pick up a 64MB Ultra at bargain prices? The GF3, is soooo expensive.

Nah, go for the IBM, they are *the* best EIDE.

I'd go for a Zip, (in fact I did) have you got a need for super floppy
media?

I'd dual boot 2k and 98, also I'd recommend the new Abit boards.

Hope this helps.

I agree with just about everything below. The Geforce3 is a whole new
architecture (read reviews at hardware review sites such as AnandTech)
that will not be utilized until the next whole generation of games.
Right now it has very little improvement over the Ultra 64 MB GF2's.
You can get the Ultra 64MB now, then the GF3 when games are using the
new architecture, and spend about as much as the GF3 is now. Only you
would not have to spend that extra money right now.

I definitely agree with the IBM recommendation. I have built hundreds
of PC's with all kinds of hard drives. IBM is by far the best when it
comes to performance and reliability. And the one IBM drive I had to
return for warranty (a laptop HD that was handled very roughly) showed
me how good IBM's RMA procedure is. They even cross-shipped! And go
with a larger drive. I got a 30 GB for only $130 3 months ago. I am
sure they have dropped some more by now.

I don't know about the JVC CDRW, but definitely get some kind of CDRW.
Their utility is unbeatable. I don't recommend the LS-120 unless you
have a very specific need for it. The CDRW will probably serve the
same purpose better. If you need a high capacity disk, the Zip is
still the way to go. I bought an LS-120 when they first came out
around 1996. What a mistake. I still don't know anyone around me who
has one. They may be popular in some places, but not around here
(Mobile, AL area).

And if you can, go with the dual boot. I set my system up as dual
boot to learn W2K inside and out, and I find that I only need to go
into 98 for a very few programs, including a game.

I do have a question for Andrew - no flame intended so please don't
take it that way. What are you doing in an Asus group recommending
Abit over Asus? I haven't used all of the different boards from
either company, but I know they both make good products (along with a
few mistakes each).

Good luck with your system. Let us know how it goes.

Kelly Baker

Sounds nice, personally I think a geoforce 3 is a little overkill at this
point, get a geoforce 2 and use the money you save to get an athalon instead
of a duron. Just my $.02

I just built a similar system, Here are my specs, and here is what I found:
*Cheap tower
Always spend the extra cash here. I bought this one just because I wanted
to try my hand a case carving and not ruin a $200 case. Test worked, but
now I hate the case. If you are gonna do it, do it right.
*Stock 300w PS
Again, do it right the first time.
*ASUS A7V133A
The new MOBOs are SICK. Read everything you can. There are more tweaks
than a mere mortal needs, but they are fun (and frustrating) to play with.
I got this one because it has gotten excellent ratings and a buddy bought
one at the same time. We kinda compare changes to see what works best.
*AMD TBird 1gHz
Spend the cash. The prices are changing fast, and with the P4s out AMD
prices are still coming down. You will also see a considerable difference
from the Duron.
*Creative Annihilator 2 (GF2)
You are putting ALOT of cash into a card you may not see much return on for
a while. You can throw some of that cash into a chip or memory.
*On-Board sound
The on-board sound from the ASUS board is pretty good (for my 2 speaker
system). I have a LIVE, but have heard of problem with the ASUS board and
want to make sure everything is stable before I add another possible
problem.
*IBM GXP 45gb (x2)
These drives are INCREDIBLE!!!! I set up the RAID and the speed is awesome.
I had a little problem with one of the drives shutting down, but found is
was trying to sleep, and crashing the RAID. Got that sorted out.
*TDK VeloCD 16x10x40x32x
Again, A SCARY fast drive. I have not coasted a single CD, and can copy a
650 CD in less that 3 mins. The performance on it has dropped, but I have
made a few changes to the system and need to figure out which one slowed it
down.

All told I dropped about $1000US on it, but have a system that should last a
while. All I can say, get the best you can afford, study all that you can
find on your hardware, and get help. You are looking at popular hardware,
so don't pull you hair out with a problem. Ask for help if you hit a dead
end.

Rounding the cable is not too tough as long as you are careful. Be sure you
have a few extra. You will trash at least 1 of the ATA cables.
