what an asshole - how am I a "fucking knob" if the price of ram is half of what was posted. nowhere in his post is there anything saying that he was australian or that he was talking about australian dollars. If there was some indication that he was talking about Australian currency I would have left it alone. Since this newsgroup is also not country specific, it was my natural reaction to read the dollar sign as american dollars. Shit, those prices would be AWSOME if they were Hong Kong dollars........ - e1000 "DJ!" <derek@jenkins.net> wrote in message news:39f6b9cb.348685709@news.dingoblue.net.au... > On 25 Oct 2000 06:40:31 GMT, "e1000" <noone@biteme.com> wrote: > > >it tells you that I live in the US and was under the impression that $ <- > >meant American Dollars. > > You, sir, are a fucking knob. > > DJ! > derek@jenkins.net

bit of a turnaround, usually the complaints come because of crossposting by US into Australian Groups. Before we all get too hot under the collar, let's note that Mr. Hayes for some reason cross-posted the original to ALT.<whatever> as well as all the AUS.<etc> groups. This is a fair call IMHO. The universal trading currency worldwide is US$ if not stated otherwise, so I think e1000 made a fair comment. Anyone who's ever done any importing/exporting will know this is true. If you restrict posts to those newsgroups which a obviously and exclusively Australian then its a fair bet figures are going to be in AU$, but if not, and you don't specify, well, the assumption is (and should be) US currency. [at great risk of being stupid as just came into this] The whole thing seems to have resulted from cross-postings. I read this in aus.ads.forsale.computers.used which *is* Australian and thus *should* have prices in AU$ and thought rude things about wrong people, until I saw cross posting to alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt. ===> suggest check carefully on cross postings before (a) quoting in unspecified $ , (b) issuing abusive flames on people (gentle reminders appropriate)

Just like in big budget futuristic movies the "whole world" and "planet earth" generally should be read as "God Bless America" the only country on the planet. The only country in the world that acts as "global cop" yet has ghettos in every city. lol - this one's a good one. so even after all the bitching and moaning about not crossposting, I should ALWAYS check for the idiot who did right. I am not saying that the US is the only country out there. I am not saying that the US is the only one that calls it's currncy Dollars and uses the symbol $. My reaction to read $ as US dollars simply stems from the fact that I live in the US, and are exposed to the US dollar in every aspect of my life. What I am saying is that if this person had not CROSSPOSTED, or specified a specific monetary unit and origin, none of this would have happened. - e1000 "Alien Spawn" <invasion@crosswinds.net> wrote in message news:39f8c626$0$11612$7f31c96c@news01.syd.optusnet.com.au... > Just like in big budget futuristic movies the "whole world" and "planet > earth" generally should be read as "God Bless America" the only country on > the planet. But if you are so smart, then maybe you would have an understanding that the world insofar as comms are concerned is a very small interconnected arena and if you are experienced in usenet and ecomms in general then you should have the ability and forsight to understand and correctly react to the possibility of errors and perhaps naive postings from less experienced users and after examining all the evidence available then state your case. Had you checked the message source, and the posting list you (and any half decent 8 year old) would have realised the mistake. In this instance you have: a) assumed all users are at your level of assumed expertise when it is clearly false; b) applied your own ideals on to others; c) ignored important sources of evidence; d) made rash and ill informed commentary; cheers.

IMO, if I am repyling to a global newsgroup sutch as alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt, there should be proper currency specifications. I understand that there are other countries out there that use $ as thier currency symbol, but again, in this case, since there are more than one meaning of $ it loses it's meaning as a unit solely from that fact that it no longer specifies a spcific value, rather it has become a generalization. these are yout accusations against me: > a) assumed all users are at your level of assumed expertise when it is > clearly false; > b) applied your own ideals on to others; > c) ignored important sources of evidence; > d) made rash and ill informed commentary; a - sorry for beeing an optimist and giving people the benefit of the doubt. next time I post I will make shure I treat everyone like an idiot because I should assume they are...well.....according to you b - I have not applied a single ideal to another person. I don't see anywhere that I said that US currency is the only one on earth that is called the dollar and is represented by the $. In this case I think one of your fellow Australians applied his ideals on the rest of the world, at least the non-australian people of alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt, his ideals of everyone in here beeing Australian, I suggest you pick this bone with him. c + d - these are the same statement written in a different mannar, so i will address them at the same time. You say that I "ignored important sources of evidence" and "made rash and ill informed commentary". I agree that I may have acted a bit in haste. However I don't believe that it is my job to research the origin of a post before a reply. What information was given to me within the post is what I reacted to and I believe that in my context, I am justified. Even though this person did post to other newsgroups, nobody knows for shure what he means by $. The implication is that is AU$ but since it is not specified, there is no real way of telling. I think in this case there was a lack of information and therefore, a gross lack of communication. If someone tells you to go get the green box in the next room, you walk over there and there are 5 green boxes, all different shades, would you be at fault for picking the wrong one??? You say you would be, I say that the person making the request didn't fulfill his/her duties in specification, rendering communication useless. Ever wonder why your teachers are so strict about units, well here you have it. - e1000 "Alien Spawn" <invasion@crosswinds.net> wrote in message news:39fbaf52$0$28145$7f31c96c@news01.syd.optusnet.com.au... > > "e1000" <noone@biteme.com> wrote in message > news:8tair9$66a@dispatch.concentric.net... > > lol - this one's a good one. > > > > It sure is > > > so even after all the bitching and moaning about not crossposting, I > should > > ALWAYS check for the idiot who did right. > > Well if you want to start an action, you should at least examine all the > evidence. > > > I am not saying that the US is the only country out there.
