Ideas needed for remote control of PC

Hey all,

I have a PC in the study with DVD and it's also my main gaming machine. At
the moment I output DVD to the telly via 10 meter S-VHS and audio cables
down the hall to the lounge. It's a pain to run back and forth to
start/stop/pause etc, but the quality is great and this PC is a bit too
noisy to have in the lounge anyway.

I plan to put a lesser PC (no monitor but will have output to the TV when
not viewing output of the DVD PC) in the lounge to play mp3's. All my PC's
are connected via 10mbps Ethernet, so I was wondering if there is some way I
can take advantage of the keyboard and mouse on this machine to control the
better PC in the other room when watching DVD's (and ideally even games on
the tv!). I'm assuming that something like PC Anywhere isn't what I'm after
because I really only need to have keyboard/mouse input to the other machine
which is sent via ethernet, with the high-bandwidth audio/video going
straight to the TV (ie I won't even have a monitor for the lounge PC) rather
than having a virtual desktop.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Here's a novel idea...if you're looking for both convenience and
reliability, buy a standalone DVD player. You can get a decent model for
around $150, and they will throw in the remote at no extra charge.

Yeah, but how one suppose to justify for more gadgets, not to mention
the "cool" factor? <g>

Fair enough, but what about the DivX movies and games? What about those
overnight rentals that I didn't get time to watch so ripped em to the HDD
instead to watch the next night? What about getting overseas-bought DVD's
to watch on my crippled region-locked standalone?

Besides, in a side by side comparison, in my opinion software decoding gives
noticeably better quality than a standalone DVD player anyway - I simply
don't see a standalone unit as a replacement for the PC equivalent.

Cheers!

Exactly what I was going to suggest, VNC works great and it's FREE too.
I have it on all my home systems and when one of the kids pc's has a
problem it saves me running up and down stairs to troubleshoot it.

Hi,
Yes, VNC is great to remote control a PC but I have testet it today and it
is too slow to play games through a VNC Connection.

1) You can burn the rips to VideoCD.
2) I don't know many DVD players that don't have region free hacks. Some
just require a certain key sequence using the remote.
3) Standalone DVD players piss all over software decoding. Perhaps you
should try using a decent TV and DVD player.

I don't have a DVD-ROM, or I'd try it myself, but I'm having a hard time
with that last claim of yours, so I'd like you to clear up a couple of things.

Your PC and monitor is in the study, and the TV is down the hall in the lounge,
so how could you conduct a "side by side" comparison with that setup?

Regardless, are you saying that you compared the DVD picture on a regular TV
to a DVD-ROM displayed on a PC monitor, and concluded
that a PC software decoder is superior to a standalone decoder?

That would be flawed logic, to say the least.

Those Apex CD/MP3 players Blow!

Besides... Who the hell wants to be limited to crappy ass 650-700 Megs
of MP3's when you can run a cat-5 cable to the living room and have 60
or so GIG's to choose from??

E-ba sometimes sells remotes for under 10 bucks that you plug into
your Com port then you load some free software to control winamp.

I would go to avsforum (www.avsforum.com) if you want better advice
than you are likely to get here. For remote control I would recommend:

o Irman and a repeater. This is very cheap to do. Buy a nice remote,
   you can go to town.
o The intel wireless keyboard. It works well and has good quick keys
for dvd control. They are also selling the keyboard, mouse, and
*gamepad* (all wireless) for 100USD here in canada. The mouse is a
battery burner so I use a gyromouse (40USD on ebay).

As for the person who recommends a standalone DVD, it is hard to
beat a *good* HTPC. The only true pain tends to be noise.

mark.

I just purchased GyroRemote Keyboard and GyroMouse Pro by Gyration
(www.gyration.com). These new wireless RF devices work slick. You can
purchase them at computers4sure.com and other places.

Most other wireless keyboards use IR which has VERY limited range. The only
other RF keyboard I've used is by InterLink and it's joystick-like,
mouse-device was the pits.

Check out http://techgems.net and do a search for winamp remote
they got what you want.
