Embarrassing!!! But how hard do I have to push??

I have had 2 very embarassing moments at my local computer parts supplier
recently.

I bought all the bits necessary for a Celeron 700 AOPEN AX3S based machine
with 128 meg PC133 RAM.
Installed everything fine -- but couldn't get the RAM to work. Took the RAM
back and got some more -- couldn't get it to work.

Took the RAM into the supplier and he installed it into his machine and it
worked perfectly. I crept out of his office with a lot of egg on my face.
Installed it back in my machine -- still it doesn't work! Take the machine
and all into his shop this time -- he pulls the RAM out and reinstalls it .
WORKS PERFECTLY!! --Lots more egg on my face!!

So what the hell am I doing wrong. I had pushed the RAM into the DIMM
sockets as hard as I could and the end clips were absolutely in place -
completely clicked into the notches in the dimm ends.

Is there a trick here somewhere?

Thanks

Barry

Not normally, it sounds like you inserted it properly and should have
worked. A DIMM won't go in backwards without breaking something due to its
off centre notch.

Some extreme thoughts are:

1. The DIMM sockets are a little dodgy and your insertion technique
(maybe the side you end up pushing in first etc) causes the socket to fail,
where as your supplier inserted it differently and snatched it.

2. Did he use the same DIMM socket as you were? If not the socket you
were using could be dodgy and the one he used is fine. Most boards now can
take DIMMs in pretty much any order, but maybe your board with that RAM
would only work by the book with it starting in the first bank

3. Did he do it in front of you? If not perhaps to save face he swapped
it for a different module while in the "back room".

4. Pushing too hard? who knows, maybe you had to be a bit more gentle
with your boards sockets, it doesn't take too much force to put them in.

Great to hear the problem is resolved anyway. Make an omelette.

The best way I have found to insert the chip is while the board is on the
table. I have also noticed that some ram chips fit tighter than others.
Different makes. Before I put the board in the case I put the ram, video and
connect the floppy. I then hook up an extra power supply and see if I can
get the board to boot. I'll put the keyboard and mouse in also. Saves a lot
of time. Then if you put the board in the case and it doesn't boot start
cussing. Just kidding, look around for a bad ground, bad cable, improperly
installed cable.....you get the idea.

Nope. Maybe it just doesnt reliably recognise that ram for some reason.

Have you had a look in deja to see if that particular motherboard is
unusually fussy about the ram its happy with ? Some of the AOpens are.

Corse there is a remote possibility he's a scam artist too. Are you
confident that he isnt ? In other words he didnt use the dimms he gave
you and he knows that the dimms he gave you dont work in all motherboards.

I had the same problem with Abit BH6 and some generic memory. Not much you
can do about it, just ask for a different memory brand.

More likely he was too gentle. Happens all the time with beginners.

You have to push it in until you hear a slight click. Beginners are usually
to gentle.

On the other hand he does say the clips come right up.

This is a common problem with some PC-chips motherboards, including my
own M571 and a friend's M577.

The DIMM sockets are just too tight and require quite a lot of force.
To avoid bending/breaking your motherboard, pack it underneath with
some doubled up cardboard, or something similar. I have stuck some
rubber feet from an old keyboard under mine.

Remembering the last time I installed my ram, had been having trouble with
it so I decided to push harder. It really surprised me when the end clips
snapped into place without being pushed there by me. Took quite a bit of
pressure to make 'em do that too. Maybe you need to push harder.
I disclame any blame / credit for broken mobos, broken DIMMs or skined
fingers. : )

Well, I have to admit that when I tried to install my DIMMs , I only pushed
them in so far and then used the end clips to clip them in. But when I took
the machine back to the dealer , I noticed that he actually put them in with
1 hand -- whereas when I did it , it seemed to me that 2 hands were needed.

Your explanation sounds good to me --- push harder!!

I've always just pushed until they clip in themselves, motherboards are
pretty tough, I've never heard of anyone snapping one (or the DIMM for that
matter) while trying to install DIMMs.

Though I stand to be corrected

Yeah, thats the best approach. I thought thats what Barry meant initially,
that appeared to be what he had said he had done. He only later said
that he actually used the clips to help the dimm into the slot.

> motherboards are pretty tough, I've never heard of anyone snapping one

Some can end up pretty unsupported under the dimm sockets.
Safer to support the motherboard if thats the case.

> (or the DIMM for that matter)

Yeah, you're not likely to snap them putting them into the socket.

I find it hard to believe that even a real klutz would manage to put it in
reversed, but I have seen someone do that with a VGA video connector.

And presumably the originals were just a tad longer or thicker and
thats why the are harder to get into the sockets than the second one.

Amusing: I've heard of someone reversing a Molex power connection to a
hard drive - he's a big tough Aussie bloke. Well, the hard drive was
absolutely fried. Circa 1995.
