have a strange problem with an old aptiva specs are: win98, 128 meg ram, 4 gig HD k6 300cpu all works beautifully with the original CD reader ide setup is: ide 1 master = hd0 ide 1 slave = hd1 ide 2 master = CD drive when i replace reader with a 52x ide CDRW it starts acting weird it won't boot ie startup screen doesnt appear so i disconnect ide 1 [slave hd1] it boots to a bios error PS2 pointing device not present - f1 to enter setup enter to continue it then boots into windows but as soon as i put a cd in the drive the system hangs and after reset it hangs on a blank screen and refuse to boot after disconnecting various devices [cd burner or had disk etc] it will eventuall boot again but without mouse port....i reinstall original cd reader and it works fine..... i hve tried 2 [brand new] burners [LG and mitsubishi] with the same result...and yes the jumpers on the burners are set correctly weird thing is when i boot with the aptiva recovery cd in the burner and run image restore [using the format hd0 option] it runs the full restore program and then boots into windows...as soon as i put a cd in the drive it imediately hangs windows and refuse to boot again... never seen anything like this and have set up countless new burners in win98 machines and never seen anything like this before thanks for your comments relloman

A fast CD burner in an old box is usually a recipe for trouble. If it works, I find that you cannot burn at full speed. I would try a BIOS update. But knowing IBM, one probably doesn't exist. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ "It's all coming back to me now", said the blind man as he peed into the wind "rello" <relloman@beasty.com> wrote in message news:418c1160.3340243@news-server... > have a strange problem with an old aptiva > specs are: > win98, 128 meg ram, 4 gig HD k6 300cpu > all works beautifully with the original CD reader > ide setup is: ide 1 master = hd0 > ide 1 slave = hd1 > ide 2 master = CD drive > > when i replace reader with a 52x ide CDRW it starts acting weird > it won't boot ie startup screen doesnt appear > so i disconnect ide 1 [slave hd1] > it boots to a bios error > PS2 pointing device not present - f1 to enter setup enter to continue > it then boots into windows but as soon as i put a cd in the drive the > system hangs and after reset it hangs on a blank screen and refuse to > boot > > after disconnecting various devices [cd burner or had disk etc] it > will eventuall boot again but without mouse port....i reinstall > original cd reader and it works fine..... > i hve tried 2 [brand new] burners [LG and mitsubishi] with the same > result...and yes the jumpers on the burners are set correctly > > weird thing is when i boot with the aptiva recovery cd in the burner > and run image restore [using the format hd0 option] it runs the full > restore program and then boots into windows...as soon as i put a cd > in the drive it imediately hangs windows and refuse to boot again... > never seen anything like this and have set up countless new burners in > win98 machines and never seen anything like this before > > thanks for your comments > > relloman

Tpical "real" requirements are ATA33 support from motherboard, a hard drive fast enough to support the burning speed chosen (UDMA working for both drives), and not using system for anything demanding enough to interfere, particularly if it's a one-hdd system with apps, OS, etc, all on same drive which is source for burnt files. Otherwise there's no reason the burner shouldn't work on a K6-2/300 box, most likely an issue not related to the specs of the system else a buggy bios.
