I have been scanning these newgroups for ages for information on the system
i wanted to compile. This is my first homebuild so i am taking alot of care
over what components i select. Below is what i think i want, but i would
really appreciate anyones advice on any alternatives to products in my
setup. Also, will all of the components i wanna buy be compatible? thanks
very much for any help you can offer, very much appreciated

AMD Athlon Socket A 1.2GHZ (83.44)
Asus A7M266 (129.94)
IBM Deskstar 41.1 GB (90.64)
Creative GeForce 2 Pro 64MB (152.75)
Creative Blaster 52x CD rom (28.20)
Suntek Vision ATX 300 psu (62.27)
Crucial 256MB DDR RAM (30.59)
Creative SoundBlaster PCI 512 (37.99)

That's it! does anyone think there is anything else i might need? i already
have a floppy drive, monitor, keyboard and mouse.
thanks for your help

Your cpu won't last very long without a heatsink and fan... and you'll
need a case, come to that... ;-)

Where are you getting these prices? Presumably they include VAT? 83.44
is a very good price for a 1.2 Athlon if that includes VAT.

Personally I'd think about an Abit mobo, say the KG7. It's had really
good reviews. If Asus, what's the difference between the A7M266 and the
A7A266 mobos?

What are you getting for the CPU HS/Fan ?? I assume the Suntek thing is the
case ? I would strongly suggest you look at the GlobalWin 802 case, it may
not be the prettiest around but it is functionally excellent. You can get
it at Overclockers UK, Tekheads and Overclocking Store. For a review have
a look at it on www.overclockers.co.uk . . . .

It depends what you are going to use it for. I would think about what you
are going to use the graphics card for, then think whether a 50 card would
do the same job....

....you could be surprised!

A7A = Ali Magik 1 chipset, supports DDR & SDR
A7M = AMD Chipset, DDR only, better performance

Think about going for a 1.4GHz Athlon, overclockers.co.uk will do you a 1.4
for 87.52 pre VAT (102 inc VAT), and they are saying its a quite
overclockable chip.

Also it might be worth waiting till the 12th of October when AMD will
release the next familiy of CPU (Palmetto or Athlon XP), if anything it
might knock the prices down on the "old" CPUs.

Does anything from "Creative" have a good reputation? They suck.

Suntek is mentioned and indeed is as case

The ASUS A7m is about the best mainboard I have ever had, it is solid.

If the KT7 is anything to go by then the KG7 will be a pain in the arse.

Also, the A7m has onboard sound, there is a jumper to disable onboard, it is
not mentioned in the manual, you will find it between PCI 2 -3.

The graphics card could be cheaper.
