This 55 year old "old fart" put together his firat computer this morning. A P3-1000 on an ASUS CUSL2-c board. And it worked first time!!! :) Well almost --- the machine starts up fine , I can access BIOS, -- but the Floppy is running permanently and when it tries to boot from the floppy , I get the dreaded "Floppy fail" message .. I think maybe I have connected the cable up the wrong way around ??? Any advice please/ Thanks barry

If flipping the cable doesn't work (which definitely could be the problem), loosen the screws and push the floppy unit into the case about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Floppy data cable is backwards, no quesiton about it. Turn it around, and all will be well! :) > This 55 year old "old fart" put together his firat computer this morning. > A P3-1000 on an ASUS CUSL2-c board. > > And it worked first time!!! :) > > Well almost --- the machine starts up fine , I can access BIOS, -- but the > Floppy is running permanently and when it tries to boot from the floppy , I > get the dreaded "Floppy fail" message .. My turn Congrats and if you can't find pin 1 on the floppy drive, it's next to the power connector so put the red line of the ide cable there. Motherboard pin1s are clearly or not so clearly marked but you can check the manual. Now are ya ready to overclock that baby :O) Thanks Lane Lewis "Barry Ward" <baz@powerup.com.au> wrote in message news:3b2af7dc@grissom... > This 55 year old "old fart" put together his firat computer this morning. > A P3-1000 on an ASUS CUSL2-c board. > > And it worked first time!!! :) > > Well almost --- the machine starts up fine , I can access BIOS, -- but the > Floppy is running permanently and when it tries to boot from the floppy , I > get the dreaded "Floppy fail" message .. Loosening the screws on a floppy unit can fix a prob with the drive not reading floppy's properly. got something to do with crappy cases twisting the drive a bit. loosening the screws allows the drive to "straighten" up and read properly. but it won't fix that prob of the drive light staying on! :-) Peter "jim dorey" <skaar@ns.sympatico.ca> wrote in message news:3B2BFF38.CB22D4B5@ns.sympatico.ca... > > > MyName wrote: > > > If flipping the cable doesn't work (which definitely could be the problem), > > ya. > > > loosen the screws and push the floppy unit into the case about 1/8 to 1/4 > > inch. > > huh? > > > Cheers > > > > MN > > -- > www.skaar.101main.net from 20:00 to 7:30 AST, ask for free access to the hidden > directories > www.geocities.com/skaar0 for the full time version, i put the newest stuff on my > home site > moderator of dopereason@yahoogroups.com > DOM and proud!!! > >

This is a simple fix so you will probably get a ton of replies. A floppy cable has a "twist" in the end going to the drive. I'd recommend buying a good book on building PC's like Scott Muellers book, Upgrading and Repairing PC's. Many pictures and a wealth of information. 55 years is not too old. My uncle is 71 years old and he has assembled Pentiums and AMDs for his own purposes. He sold his business and is now a paid manager of the same business. In facts you are still a youngster. Between 60 and 63 my grandfather fathered two children. My grand-uncle fathered a girl at aged 69!! Scott Mueller's book is too thick and voluminous. One can get hernia just by carrying the book. No I don't think it is suitable for anyone but an academician. I have the book and it sits on the shelf. What is easy is explained in many pages and with so much theory that it becomes difficult. When one has a real problem and tries to consult the book no solution can be found. No just go to the corner friendly OMO computer shop and explain your problem;the nerd there may just give you free advice or solution. Anyway the solution in this NGs for your problem is very apt and to the point. You should have no problem in fixing your problem. with the floppy disk drive. Could it laso be that the floppy drive is set to another floopy setting instead on 3 1/4' floppy in BIOS. I had this problem ages ago and I pondered on it for too long.
