Old P233 machine only recognises 32 meg of 128 meg new P133 stick??

I have an old P233MMX which uses an Intel TX chipset on an Oktek motherboard and has been running 2x32 meg of 66 meghz SDRAM The motherboard manual specifically states that it will allow RAM sizes up to 128 meg , single or double side can be used in either of the 2 DIMM slots - up to a max of 256 megs. I have removed the 66 meg RAM and replaced them with 1 stick of 128 meg P133 RAM -- the BIOS and Windows will only recognise 32 meg. If I place one of the old 32 meg sticks back in as well as the 128 , it then recognises a total of 64 meg. This occurs with all combinations using the 2 DIMM slots. Looking at the "chipset details" setup page in the BIOS reveals all kinds of setting relating to RAM timing -- most of which I don't understand . These include such things as DRAM Read and Write burst timing, RAS to CAS delay, DRAM PAGE Idle timer, etc, etc. I'm pretty sure that these timings are affecting the bios inability to recognise the full 128 meg -- but not sure.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Barry in Brisbane Australia

tried flashing the bios? What type of 128MB RAM will the board address though? Think of RAM as a spreadsheet with X columns times Y rows. If your motherboard is able to recognize only X columns and you install RAM that is 4X columns, then your motherboard will only use the first X columns, and thus it's only using about 1/4th of the RAM stick installed. If you are lucky, a simple BIOS flash will overcome this limitation. But it is most likely hardware related. And flashing your BIOS should only be done as a very last resort, as it could cause irreversible damage to your motherboard. If you are not sure of the exact type of RAM that your motherboard will accept, check the manual, or go to the motherboard manufacturer's web site. -Dave -- On linuxfreemail dot com, I am user "spamfilter". Use a brand new floppy disk, don't turn the power off in the middle, thoroughly read the readme files first. BIOS updates are a piece of cake procedure that provide often useful hardware updates. I liked your X and Y analogy with the RAM tho, good stuff :) --------- BoganMan [[ ICQ 32988117 ]]

It is easy for the most part, but do pay attention. I've done it several times without a problem. The advice about a new floppy is important as well as not turning off the machine in the middle of the operation. And make sure you save the old content when prompted to by the flash program. more than likely the ram is high density and not true 66mhz. What they do is take 100mhz and clock it down to 66. Some times it works some time it doesn't. Check to the last number on the ram chip, if it is a 10 it is 66mhz if it is less than 10 then it is not 66mhz. Hi I've recently had this problem, try and find some PC 66 memory to use. As my P233MX which took both 72pin and 168 pinn would only recognise 16 meg on a 64 meg stick. Also really will an increase in memory, really improve a machine that old? Regards, Kurt Mirow

The motherboard manual does not specify what "kind" of RAM it will address.. But bear in mind tht it was written 4 years ago, in the days of P66 RAM.. It does however specify that RAM to the size of 128 meg can be used.- but it will only recognize 32 meg of this new 128meg P133. A RAM upgrade will improve any machine . . . especially if you start with less than 64MB. Beyond 256MB though, you're probably better off upgrading something else like CPU/Motherboard/Video Card. -Dave -- On linuxfreemail dot com, I am user "spamfilter". If the memory module is recognized as smaller - chances are your MoBo or chipset doesn't work with newer high density chips... very common in older systems. As for running up to 256MB of memory - need to ask what chipset first... some Socket 7 only cache the first 64MB & going above that can actually make the system slower since you are using uncached memory. -- --------------- Specialty Tech - Main Boards, CPU, Memory and more... You should be using 72 pin SIMMs, your P133 SIMM has 128 pins. So ditch your 128Mb SIMM and replace it with two x 64Mb 72pin EDO SIMMs. Cheers, Peter.
