How to speed up commercial computer?

A friend of mine has recently bought his first computer -- a Celeron 667 on
a Micro ATX board with integrated video and sound and only 64 meg RAM. It
appears to have an ATA66 Hdd (UDMA Mode 4) and runs Windows ME.

It is soooo slow!!!! Its slower (especially loading) than my old P233 with
64 meg RAM running Windows 95

I figure the main problem is that 64 meg RAM (- 8 meg for the onboard
video ) plus running Windows ME is the killer!! I am going to get him
another 128 Meg RAM -- but cannot do anything about the sound, video or Hdd
(I think).

Any other suggestions to speed this thing up -- please don't tell me to
ditch ME -- that is also out of the question.

Thanks

Might also be able to put in a PCI video card, which would be faster
than the onboard video. Most system like that will disable onboard
video if you plug in another video card. Some have a jumper (and some
few will not take another video card at all). Have had good luck with
Nvidia TNT2 based PCI cards upgrading these micro atx type systems.

What else is running besides Me......There may be a virus scan going on or
who knows what else. Maybe shutting down a few items after a
ctrl-alt-delete would help.

<snip>

Definitely boost the RAM. Also check the programs that are running
upon bootup. One of them may be bogging the systems or you could just
have too many things running.

Are yoou sure the onboard video doesm't have it's own memory near the video
chip? My old AST had memory at the S3 chip itself, so more could be added.

I am using the Celeron 633mhz now with WINDOWS 98 SE. It used to have 64mb
of RAM when I brought it but I soon upgraded with another 128mb for games,
etc. It is running fine and the only other upgrade I did was disabled the
onboard sound and put a Sound Blaster Vibra 128 in it (around $50)

Runs nicely and I can even use it programs like Paint Shop Pro 7 with large
images without to much lag....
