Comments regarding USB peripherals connection please??

I am putting together a P3-1000 based machine . I will also a USB
gamestick controller and a digital camera with USB connection.

I have noticed that keyboards come with either PS2 connections or USB
connections. Some of the USB keyboards have 2 additional USB connections on
the back of the keyboard (makes for easy access plus gives you a free USB
connection) . HOWEVER, this additional back of keyboard USB connection is
limited to 100 milli amps and the PS2 connection on the back of the 'puter
gets wasted.

So - which way to go -- a Keyboard that uses a PS2 connection or one that
uses a USB connection but gives the added advantage of an extra back of
keyboard connection. ( This one sounds like it would be convenient to plug
the digital camera into)

Thanks

I would think with USB as the new technology I would go with it, everything
will eventually go to USB.

It will? Has anyone told this to the people that make Firewire peripherals?

**I don't have the specs to hand, but around 100 times faster, I seem to
recall. The reality, however, is that FirewireT is probably unnecessary for
things like: Keyboards, mice, dial up modems, etc. USB would seem to be the
cheap and cheerful answer. Still, as prices fall (for FirewireT), who knows?

Yoh Barry, how's your new PC going, still under construction ?
But, what do you do with the existing PS2 ports and just how fast can you
type anyway ?
I'd stick with the PS2 ports for now and just disable any other ports you
dont require.
If quantity of USB ports is an issue, most mobos have an extra couple
onboard just requiring
an adapter cable.

The MS natural internet keyboard (the twisted one with the buttons along the
top) is a PS2 interface (for the keyboard) and has a USB plugin for it's
built in USB hub (2 ports on back). The USB part of it is only a pass thru
hub and you gain an extra USB port. You get the best of both worlds...

You answered your own question. If your USB device(s) are rated more than
.1 amps, then you can't use the keyboard you're talking about for the USB
device(s). Check the amperage usage of your anticipated USB device(s)
before making a decision. I'll assume you have USB legacy support for the
USB keyboard in dos (boot diskette), and you're running some current version
of windows.

A PS/2 keyboard will never be prone to driver issues. For the forseeable
future I plan to use them. I know many motherboards support "legacy" USB
(they have a way to drive a USB keyboard by themselves) but I haven't tried
it. Still, the keyboard variety is still all PS/2. I only see a few USB
keyboards out there.

Mouse however, I have no problems with USB. Seems all new mice come in a
USB flavor.

don't forget USB2.0 is out or coming out very soon. it's supposed to be
quick, but i don't know the figures. it might be as fast or faster then
ieee1394/firewire.

Usb 2.0 will not be supported under windows XP which gives Firewire a big

wtf? how can MS do that? usb2.0 is a ieee STANDARD. xp might not support it
but i'm sure USB will bring out they're own.
