Hi! > Wow, if you simply spent the $115 on a faster cpu, wouldnt you likely have a > faster system than the overclocked one - and running at spec? That's my train of thought... If I can spend $25 and keep my CPU running at a decent temp, then I'd be happy. My problem right now is that I'm seeing higher than normal temps on a stock installation without overclocking. A 1.3gig AMD chip idling at 65'C is not good, and this is with a Thermaltake Super Orb with white thermal grease on an Asus A7A266. You can imagine what happens when I fire up the Geforce card and start playing some intensive games! > > They also carry 3g tubes of Arctic Silver II for $14.95 I believe. I'm hoping this may help a bit as I've tried a few times with the white grease... a little more, a little less... doesn't help. And with these stupid Orbs, you can't flip the fans over either (which helped my wife's TBird 850). > > If you're looking for a copper shim, they're not for drawing heat away from > > the processor, they're to prevent you from crushing your processor with the > > heatsink. I figured as much... The contact point on the CPU for the heatsink is too small. I was hoping to gain a larger contact area. Bottom line is that when I build a PC, I want it to be stable - overclocked or not - and I'm not liking what I'm seeing. One comment I do have, it seems that ALL the MB manufacturers are pushing the core voltage up a bit to "play it safe" and keep the CPU's stable. My MSI board here defaults the core voltage to 1.89. or so when it's set at 1.75v. The above mentioned ASUS set the voltage to 1.85 or so when in "jumper free" mode, which may be contributing to the heat factor. SS
