HEY, WHAT'S THE BEIGE IDEA??

A year and a half ago I came across a popular computer magazine (like PC
Magazine, but it seems *not* PC Magazine, although I could still be
mistaken) that had a short little product-article thingy on a company that
sells "designer cases", or computer cases that were "rebellious" to the
boring beige computer cases everyone has today. They included dark teal,
dark maroon, and black, and were very beautifully rounded and shaped. I
want this in my living room!

Does anyone know of this or any other case manufacturer that does this? I'm
desperate, I've spent hours--entire nights, even--trying to find it,
but have come up short!!

Thanks,
Jon Davis

Acer makes a line of computers that look very space-age, like big
vitamin pills. I had one for a while and it was not bad (but the
matching keyboard and mouse were junky and needed to be replaced).
They came in 'charcoal' and 'emerald' and maybe more colors now.
If you don't need the very latest thing, Acer has a company store
in San Jose with refurbs and returns that are very reasonable. I
couldn't tell you where, but they advertise in Micro-Times or
Computer Currents.

Shape is tricky to hack, but a can of spray-paint goes a long way towards the
color side. I've done several black ones -- the textured "barbeque" paint
works well for this -- and you can get cool textured trendy color mixes from
your local hardware place... Krylon or somebody had some pastels, very
Southwestern patterns, you can spray on.

To do it right ya gotta take all the faceplates out (or off, CD's and floppies
for instance, not losing little springs and screws!) and do it all a piece at
a time, but a weekend day with a lot of breaks would do it.

You know, there's this wonderful invention out now called "spray paint"...

Better yet: take your outer shell on, say, a minitower to a local airbrush
artist and tell him to have a blast with it.

No, I know what you mean.
About two years back a designer was selling luxury cases...
one in bright red, can't remember the other color.
The cases were humped and somewhat conch-shell
inspired. The fronts of all the drive bays were out-of-plane
with each other... i.e., as the case arched over hump-wards,
they recessed further and further towards the back of the
box.
They were featured in I.D. magazine. If nothing else I guess
you could mail I.D....

And in general: why hasn't anyone else attemped this?
Designer cases seem easy to build (well, compared to
fabbing a new chipset) and seem like they'd sell well
in the luxury market.

Hm.

But even spray paint won't work on a perfectly square box. I want something
shaped artistically, too... giving a square box a paint job isn't my idea of
beauty... I imagine it would just look like somebody took an ugly beige box
and spray-painted it. Yuck.

Hmmm... you could do some metal working, or used fiberglass to create the
case.

Ever thought of covering the box in clear strong plastic. Neaten up the inside
and it looks great...
