Hi, I recently bought a computer with pentium 166 chip. When I turned
on, I see the start-up box that shows up on the screen after boot says
"Pentium-133". I was really surprised !!! So I opened the computer
and see what's wrong. I tried to see the speed printed on the
microprocessor, but it's glued to the fan, so I can not tell what chip
it is. Then I saw the jumper on the mother board was not set to 166
clock-speed, but 133. I thought this might be the problem, but was
not dare to switch it to 166 myself, afraid that something might go
wrong.
So I took the computer to the store which I bought it from (a small
vendor). They said that it was the jumpers, so they reconfigured it
and gave me back. It now shows up as pentium-166 on the boot-up
screen.

But I have this one question... What if I have a pentium 133 chip and
set the clock-speed to 166, what will happen?? I asked my friend, he
said it will actually run faster, but the processor is going to burn
out faster too. And the people in the store that sold me this
computer told me that, if jumper sets the speed higher than the
processor speed, the computer simply will not boot-up.
I don't know which one is the true case. If the former one is
possible, wouldn't the vendor sell computers like that and rip off the
customers???

Please e-mail me at taih@mail.idt.net to tell me. Thanx in advance.
