it could very well have been caused by a virus and since you have to enter the volume number (which is corrupted) fdisk will not allow you to delete the partition what you can do is go to www.bootdisk.com and in their utility downloads get aefdisk.exe copy it to your boot floppy and instead of runninf fdisk run aefdisk/delall the delall switch should completely wipe the drive then you can run fdisk from dos and recreate your partition(s) reboot and format
