I've just upgraded my 486 with a PCChips 717 (I think yours is a BX chipset, mine's an LX with a PII-333). Seems to be a good board (for the money), and has been performing flawlessly with my SCSI disks (no IDEs) on bootup and beyond. Except for the following problem I've noticed recently, which *seems* to be similar to yours. My 717 has a 8MB AGP onboard video driver which I use (no extra video card). It works fine, except recently I've been noticing that when I turn the PC on cold, the system hangs. That is, stead of powering on and normally the mobo bios cutting in followed by my Adaptec SCSI controller bios then cutting in, the screen stays just black/blank without the mobo bios even cutting in. Subsequent reboots seem to remedy the problem. I thought I had loose video connectors, but apparently not. It seems to happen only when I boot up cold the first time (I use the PC in the evenings only). I haven't had time to try this out yet, but I suspect that my 717's bios settings of "on" for "power conservation of the display" has something to do with it. There are some nifty power saving features in the bios, but I'm running on (my old 486's) AT power supply. I suspect some of the power down/suspend features of the mobo bios could be causing such problems. Don't know if it'll fix your disk boot problem, but worth a shot when you're desperate!! Andre'.
