I have recently purchased a P3 450Mhz, and replaced my P2 300MHz. My mohterboard is an Abit 440BX, and has a SoftSet menu. ALthough it was reading the new proc as a P2, I could still set the menu to see it as a 450Mhz (100 MHz bus). The PC booted up fine, but as soon as Windows started to load, it errored with this: "An exception 0E has occured at 0028:C000AB12 in VxD VMM (D1) + 00009B12. This was called from 0028:C1414240 in VxD ---. It may be possible to continue normally." Well, it didn't. Windows then said "Windows Protection error. You need to restart your computer". Now, when I put my old P2 back in, it worked fine. So, my question is this- do I need special speed memory to use with a P3/ 440BX motherboard? I know there are 100MHz speed DIMMS out there, but I am not entirely sure that I have them in my system? Any susggestions greatfully received! It would be preferable if you could mail me any answers, as my NG access is limited.
