I STAND CORRECTED.

I run Win98 from IDE1, and lots of other things on removable drives on IDE2,
so I tend to only run with one channel on at a time.

Here's what I did: I turned the IDE2 on and let the computer boot into 98.
When I looked in My Computer, the hard drive on IDE2 was not listed and did
not show up until I ran the add/remove hardware applet. (in which case it
showed up as G: first, then E: after subsequent reboots.)

If 98 did in fact "scan", it failed to detect the drive. When "forced" to
look for other hardware though, it came up with the additional drive.

You were right, I was wrong. And I learned something. (Not the least of
which is not to SHOUT when I disagree. My apologies.)
