I have being doing some simple timing tests between my G4 and G3 and have
found that appleshare/appletalk is transferring files 50% faster than
appleshare/IP.
I only have a small network of three macs and one pc connected with a brand
new 100mbps compatible switch. Both macs have new 100mbp ethernet cards and
I have conducted controlled tests with the same file transfer between the
same machines.
How can it be possible that appletalk is performing better than IP?

Can someone please help me with this enigma?

Thanks
Phil

Could you post details of exactly how you've done your file transfer
tests, and how you've timed transfers?

My experience is opposite to yours. But here are some possibilities.
a) TCP/IP is misconfigured
b) very small IP MTU
c) very small RWIN

I'm sure there are lots of other possibilities.

Well I'm not a networking expert, but I have a multiplayer game (pre
OSX) that has directions for setting up a network game and it suggests
you use Appletalk instead of TCP/IP for gaming beacause it is a faster
connection. So who ever wrote that agrees with your findings.
